Paul Petro: “This video has it all: the setting is Studio 54, the event is a Kenzo fashion show with runway models including Grace Jones and Jerry Hall.
Kinda cheezy. The camera is cropped pretty tight and a little may go a long way but it’s an endearing slice of the times nevertheless. Two songs in and we’re listening to a disco version of “Can’t Turn Me Loose” that has more than a few early warning signs of Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” to come further down the pyke. Odyssey’s “Native New Yorker”, The Emotions’ “Best Of My Love”, Al Green’s “Still In Love With You” (he’s in a class of his own) and on. At 14:00 the tempo changes and we get into more classic Kenzo boho peasant fashion and the room loosens up a little. And then at 17:15 we have Grace Jones brought on stage to belt out her then #2 hit “I Need A Man” (#1 being “La Vie En Rose”), decked in black leather and carrying a whip and singing in stroboscopic darkness. Then the stage fills with dancing celebrity models and Kenzo takes a bow at 21:45. Don’t miss Grace at 22:50 to take full visual advantage of her leather gear in the brightened stage light. A few words from Kenzo and then the camera hits the dancefloor and Jerry Hall.
